Our Statement for Black Lives Matter

The recent murder of George Floyd and subsequent protests around the world have refocused the spotlight on the pervasive and ongoing racism in our society and the consequential treatment of black people across the world. The outpouring of outrage and hurt within the black community and by allies is a reminder that we have much more work to do. For our black colleagues in the industry, we feel your pain and we hear your voices.

Ingrained prejudice and racism of society, is completely unacceptable and has been allowed to continue for far too long. It’s time for action.  We all need to put in the often hard and uncomfortable work of addressing and dismantling our own prejudices. By being actively anti-racist we can turn rhetoric into action. At iCAN we support you however you choose to further the Black Lives Matter movement. Whether it is through education, dialogue with senior leadership, broader employee engagement techniques, use of inclusive language and imagery, or sharing of best practices.

An important way in which we as a network can address racial inequality and social injustice is by continuing with our mission to advance those with ethnic minority backgrounds within insurance. Now in particular is a time to deliver on our commitment to make this a reality.

At iCAN, part of our mission is to raise awareness among senior leaders across the insurance industry, urging them to utilise their position of privilege to implement vital change in the workplace. The fight against racism is everyone’s fight. It is essential work and we are here for you if you need support or to have conversations in a safe and supportive space.

We are developing a guide in three parts, aimed at facilitating senior executive decision makers, D&I leaders, Employee Resource Group (ERG) leaders, allies, and individuals in the activities for change. The guide will contain practical advice on how everyone can take action, regardless of what position they hold in their organisation. We hope it will be a useful resource and one we can build upon in the future.

We are here for you all. If you feel like you need to talk, we are only an e-mail away. Together we can make a difference.
