Yom Kippur 2022 - what you need to know

Yom Kippur runs from 4 - 5 October 2022. Here’s everything you need to know about the holiest day in Judaism…

What is Yom Kippur?

Yom Kippur is the emotional climax of the Jewish faith’s high holy days that start with Rosh Hashanah.

Yom Kippur means “day of atonement” and happens on the 10th day of the first month of the civil year and the seventh month of the religious year in the Hebrew calendar. During the 10-day period between the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, a person is thought to be able to influence God’s plan for the coming year.

How is Yom Kippur celebrated?

The celebration begins at sundown and lasts until sundown of the following day. During this period, work is prohibited, and the reparation of wrongdoings is expressed through afflictions such as fasting, holding back washing or bathing, sexual relations, wearing leather shoes, and applying lotions or creams.

Yom Kippur has five prayer services during its celebration at the synagogues. With the last prayer, a shofar is sounded and expresses that God’s forgiveness is granted and the 25 hours fasting is over.
