A Powerful Start for iCAN Bristol: Building Inclusion in the Insurance Industry

Last week marked an inspiring milestone as iCAN, in partnership with the Chartered Insurance Institute of Bristol, launched its Bristol Roundtable event.

Held at Armada House, the evening gathered professionals from across the insurance and financial services sectors to explore Bristol-specific challenges and opportunities around diversity, equity, and inclusion.

With a lively turnout and deep conversations, it was clear that the city’s insurance community is committed to driving meaningful change.

The iCAN Bristol launch set out to create a platform for DEI discussions tailored to the Bristol community. The event aimed to connect local professionals, highlight key DEI challenges in the region, and collaboratively develop strategies to attract and retain a diverse workforce in the insurance industry.

Engaging with local DEI issues ensures that iCAN’s mission remains impactful, helping shape an industry that reflects Bristol’s vibrant, multicultural fabric.

Key Insights and Discussion Points

The roundtable featured rich conversations across several critical areas:

Regional Recruitment and Retention

One of the night’s key themes was the need to attract diverse talent to the insurance sector while cultivating environments that make them want to stay.

Creating welcoming, inclusive workplaces was seen as vital to retaining diverse voices in the industry.

Cross-Sector Collaboration

The evening highlighted that underrepresented groups still face significant challenges in accessing careers within the sector.

Attendees agreed that establishing mentorship and support networks could play a key role in breaking down these barriers, empowering future talent from all backgrounds.

Need for Local Action

Recognising Bristol’s unique cultural landscape, attendees emphasised the importance of connecting with local schools, universities, and community organisations.

By engaging with these networks, the industry can build stronger, community-rooted DEI initiatives and enhance the sense of belonging for future talent.

The launch event reinforced the importance of connecting Bristol’s insurance professionals with local DEI efforts.

With plans for a larger launch event next year, iCAN is eager to further expand its reach and impact in the region.

We look forward to seeing continued engagement, collaboration, and actions that make the insurance industry more inclusive and reflective of Bristol’s diverse community.

A heartfelt thank you to the Chartered Insurance Institute of Bristol for their partnership, our hosts at Armada House, and to everyone who attended. Your insights, ideas, and commitment to change inspire us and drive our mission forward.
