Reflecting on the Power and Identity of Black Hair: iCAN’s Reclaiming the Roots Event
As part of this year’s Black History Month, iCAN hosted a powerful and inspiring event, Reclaiming the Roots, in collaboration with our sponsors Beazley, Lloyd’s, and Amwins Global Risks.
This event was aligned with the theme of “Reclaiming Narratives,” celebrating the rich history, resilience, and identity represented through Black hair.
The evening provided an essential space to reflect on the cultural significance of Black hair, the systemic pressures to conform, and the journey toward embracing authenticity.
A Celebration of Identity Through Black Hair
The panel discussion featured a remarkable group of speakers, including Marcia McFarlane, Mark Lomas, Chartered FCIPD, Tiolu Agoro, and Katy Hodgson, each bringing personal stories and expertise that resonated deeply with attendees.
Through their diverse experiences, they shared key insights that broadened our understanding of the importance of Black hair in cultural identity and self-expression.
Key Takeaways from the Event
1.The Cultural Significance of Black Hair
The panel discussion highlighted the ways in which Black hair is tied to cultural heritage, pride, and resilience.
Speakers explored the challenges Black individuals have historically faced in expressing their authentic selves due to societal pressures to adopt mainstream beauty standards.
Marcia McFarlane spoke about embracing her natural hair as her personal brand, while Mark Lomas emphasised the importance of maintaining pride in his identity, describing his authenticity as a strength rather than a liability.
2. Practical Guidance: Scalp Care Demonstration
A unique highlight of the event was a live scalp care demonstration led by Tiolu Agoro, who provided insights into the importance of scalp health as an integral part of hair care.
The demonstration on Marcia reinforced the notion that caring for Black hair is a holistic journey, one that reflects overall wellness and self-care.
Tiolu’s guidance offered practical tips for nurturing Black hair, bridging the gap between cultural appreciation and everyday care.
3.Embracing Authenticity and Challenging Perceptions
Katy Hodgson shared her personal journey in navigating conversations around identity with her children, reflecting on the importance of role models and representation.
She spoke of the responsibility to address prejudice and create spaces where diverse identities are respected and celebrated.
Her story underscored the impact of calling out biases and challenging stereotypes to create positive change for the next generation.
Reclaiming the Roots reminded us that while we may not have created the systems that shape society today, we bear the responsibility to reshape them for the future. Black hair is more than a style; it is a powerful expression of identity, heritage, and resilience.
A heartfelt thank you to our panellists, attendees, and sponsors who made this evening a success.
