What is World Religion Day?
World Religion Day first originated in Persia (now Iran) by the members of the Baha’í faith in the 19th century. They believe all religion has common features and similarities to be valued. Baha’i faith believes in the oneness of religion and humanity, and that no one should be treated differently because of their race, age, gender, color, sexuality, or whether they believe in religion or not. World Religion Day is commemorated on the third Sunday of January each year and this year it’s the 15th of January 2023.

Although it was first observed by the Baha’is in Illinois, USA, this day is celebrated and respected by the people with various religions.
How many religions are there in the world?
Defined by the Oxford dictionary, Religion is an action or conduct indicating belief in, obedience to, and reverence for a god, gods, or similar superhuman power; the performance of religious rites or observances. Currently, there are over 4200 religious beliefs in the world and 83.7% of the world’s population is considered to be religious. The most common religions are Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

World religion day is all about interfaith and showing respect to all beliefs. You can celebrate this day by visiting religious places, sharing your religion’s beliefs with others, and hearing about their beliefs. In the UK, World Religion Day events often take place in local Baha'i communities, such as lectures, devotional meetings, and interfaith activities. Many Baha'i communities also participate in interfaith events organized by other groups, such as multi-faith services, cultural festivals and peace walks.
