Assistant Finance Business Partner - National Markets

This position sits within Markel's Accounting and Finance group and is responsible for the recording, reconciling, analysing and reporting of financial information for the various MINT entities. The Assistant Business Partner will interact with a variety of stakeholders across the business, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently are crucial.

This position will be assisting the Head of Finance – National Markets. The successful candidate will work side by side with both the MINT finance team and the National Markets business divisions.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide finance function support and financial analysis to the National Markets division.

  • Work alongside the Markel Global Analyst team (US based) to produce regular critical metrics and associated analysis in an accurate and timely fashion.

  • Provide financial analysis to build a better understanding of the reported US GAAP results for both underwriting and services, primarily by providing insight into variances to plan.

  • Support the business in their business planning process, including written strategic business plans and GAAP planning.

  • Assisting each of the 3 regions with relevant support and data ahead of the Combined Ratio Meetings.

  • Provide support as required to assist the National Markets division in achieving their targets in relation to the 10-5-1 initiative.

  • Ad-hoc activities, for example on supporting M&A activity, cover holder analysis or other business related support.

What we’re looking for:

  • Have a strong analytical mind-set and excellent excel skills. Demonstrate experience of working in the non-life insurance industry.

  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of technical insurance accounting skills, combined with the ability to work closely with a very broad range of partners.

  • Demonstrate a desire to learn and progress in the organisation.

  • Be reliable and take self-responsibility to respond in a timely fashion to business requests.

  • Work and form close relationships with other parts of Finance, including helping others (and vis versa).
